Real

Posted in blog, Lucy, memories, writing | 2 Comments
I bought Lucy new bedsheets this weekend. Actually – both kids got new sets. Connor is still all about Transformers and he’s clearly outgrown the Nemo set. (And don’t even get me started on his Thomas the Tank Engine sheets. He wore holes in them when he was younger.) I bought Lucy another set of Hello Kitty sheets. Different design than what she currently has, but we’ve washed the old set so many times they’re starting to tear, so makes sense, right? The thing is, she has a favorite blanket from that original set. It’s not a security blanket, exactly…but it’s hers. She’s had it since she was about 15 months. She guards it fiercely. So the other night she started crying when I put her to bed. Because she was starting to like the new blanket on the new set and she was afraid of hurting the old blanket’s… Read more

Get Down With the Sickness

Posted in bioware, blog, dragon age, Lucy, mass effect, sick | Leave a comment
Or so they say. 4 days after Lucy finished up her meds for strep…she came down with it again. (And 2 weeks before her first round, Connor had it, so it’s just been antibiotic central here.) And then there’s me. Who spent several hours playing the multiplayer version of the ME3 demo on Friday night (until about 2 AM or so?) Managed to give myself such a terrible case of “mouse shoulder” that I ended up drugging myself into oblivion on Saturday. Couldn’t even turn my neck. That being said, it was hella fun. Though I should point out, I was playing with other women that I knew from various places in the Bioware fandom. So it was laid-back and helpful, even though this was my first time out. As opposed to the story that was going around on tumblr last week, where one of the ladies I know ended… Read more

All About a Freckle

Posted in back pain, blog, Connor, I'm sorry you had to read this, Lucy, rambly | 2 Comments
I could talk about my nerve burning procedure today…but I won’t. Though apparently it will take a few weeks to really work (and it concerns me that as soon as I was done the doc asked me what pain meds I had at home and then prescribed me something slightly less powerful than morphine. So when I’m high later, you all know why.) Whatever. I’m self medicating with a bag of Reese’s Pieces until the lidocaine wears off and then we’ll see what’s what. Annnyway, today’s post is about a freckle. Not that I’m big on Valentine’s Day posts, but ms Lucy seems to have a lot of little boyfriends in Kindergarten. Only she came home yesterday and told me one of them didn’t like her anymore because she had a freckle on her neck. It’s a cute freckle, by the way. However, her current beau has decided that freckle… Read more

Seeing Double

Posted in blog, glasses, Lucy | Leave a comment
I started wearing glasses some time in the 4th grade. I have a vague recollection of being able to see just fine one moment and then looking a something at the board and having just the faintest edges start to waver out of focus. I must have said something to someone, because shortly after that point, I ended up with glasses. (Although I have no recollection of the actual process of getting the things.) And of course, this was circa 1984, so the glasses I got were ginormous bug-eyed looking things, made of heavy glass.  (Seriously, WTF was up with fashion in those days? We all look so damn goofy with our knee high socks and our short shorts. And giant puffy ringlet curl perms. And buggy glasses.)  I got my first pair of contacts in 8th grade and I’ve never looked back, so to speak. And since my dad… Read more

Chin Up

Posted in birthday, blog, Lucy | 5 Comments
I had a different post planned for today. Something writerly, I suppose, but it got a taken off the rails part way through the day. Today was Lucy’s birthday, and even though I had plans to do some baking and shopping and all that fun stuff, things got ugly when she fell off swing set at school and split her chin open. (Seriously, it’s REALLY ugly. Took 3 stitches to close. Which doesn’t sound like much, but she turned 5 today. She’s got a tiny chin.) Anyway, that aside, I was a bit of a wreck, even though in the grand scheme of things it’s not that big a deal. And so, I have made my darling girl her requested strawberry cake. And plied her with gifts of Hello Kitty and My Little Pony. And a stuffed hedgehog, who she so aptly named “Justin Beaver.” And afterwards? Why, yes, I… Read more
