The Shedding of My Skin

That’s the last I remember: the blood-stained hair waving from the tree limb like a ribbon, my red Coach purse on the boulder, my leather gloves crumpled next to it, like the discarded skin of a snake.~~ Jeffe Kennedy      Obsidian I’ve always been rather fascinated with the skin shedding aspects of snakes. Or any animal, really. Lots of symbolism mixed in there, making it rather appropriate for the last post of the year. The end of the year is always somewhat melancholy for me. Maybe it’s just those long moment of introspection that make me take a long hard look at the past twelve months, wondering if I’ve managed to outgrow the mistakes I’ve made or if I’m ready for the challenges ahead. Off for Christmas

Okay. It’s Christmas Eve. Presents are wrapped, egg-nog is flowing freely and kids are nearly ready for bed. (Though apparently Connor has a touch of the demon child eyes going on in this picture.) Good news is that we’re off to Vermont tomorrow so I’ll be offline for a few days as there isn’t really any internet where we’re going. (mr myn’s parents have enough help to see them through for a few weeks and we desperately need to disconnect from the world for a bit, so I’m not really thinking too hard on it.) My cats are being boarded and fixed up at the vet’s and are less than thrilled with me. I was going to take the stray too, but at $22 a day per cat, plus the shots and dental work my cats need, I’m already up about $600 and I just can’t afford another one. She’s… Read more

Originality

I got a rather frantic email yesterday from a friend who was a bit panicked over the the possibility that one the names of her characters was very similar to the name of a different character in someone else’s work. She asked me what she should do about it, and what I did to ensure my writing was original. Did I Google names? Plots? Characters? I decided to think about it for a bit and reply to her here. The truth of the matter is that it really *has* all been done before. Even not counting that Hollywood seems determined to do nothing but remake movies based off of previously existing movies, the same could probably be said of many of the books and stories out there.
