Wolf Spiders, Yay!

I tried to get a real picture of one of these today with my own camera, but the little dudes just wouldn’t sit still long enough. Plus my camera kinda blows, so I just found this one online here. The point here is that my backyard is full of them. Hundreds. Thousands. When we walk through the taller grass these little hairy monsters just start crawling beneath our feet. During Connor’s birthday party, we set up the huge water slide that we have, which was great, but during the set up and take down of said slide, the spiders crawled over it in droves. (And the grasshoppers and crickets too, but they were very tiny). My mother-in-law- thinks we should have someone come out and kill all the spiders, but that seems a tad draconian to me. For one thing, I’m not one for just dumping poison in my yard…

Backaches Part II

….And it’s official. My back is toast. Got my MRI back and went to the doc’s yesterday. And, well. The disc that cracked last year has obviously compressed – but that was sort of expected. What we were hoping for is that with time/PT/etc the herniation would reduce itself, as it often does. As you can see from the picture, it hasn’t. Not only that, the disc is apparently fragmenting – and according to the doc, part of it has broken off and is now sorta floating in my spine there. Hence the pain that never goes away. He said it was akin to a pebble in your shoe – but my spine is the shoe, in this case, obviously. So whereas the pain may not always be horrible, you know it’s always there, and when you stomp on that pebble it hurts like a mofo. (Or in my case,…

Boy-Crazy Girl Child

My nearly 3 year old is crazy. Well. Maybe not. But I’m beginning to wonder how much trouble I’m going to have with the little darling when she hits her teen years. She’s already rather interested in boys. Case in point – when she saw the David Garrett video I was watching, she asked if she could “eat him.” (erm, get in line, honey). Actually what she said was “Who is that? Can I eat him? Can I eat his sweater?” The mind boggles, I guess… During our summer vacation, we visited one of our favorite pizza joints. Food was good, as it always is, but the table next to us was being served by a young guy named Rocky. Now admittedly, Rocky was pretty damned good looking, but as soon as Lucy saw him, her mouth just dropped open. Ignoring us and the her dinner, her eyes just followed…

Well, finally, I managed to get my crap together and get that submission package sent to Tor. I don’t know why it took me as long as I did – for a little while I got stuck in that cycle of “it’s just not *good* enough”. And I edited and edited and edited and edited some more. And the truth of the matter is that no matter how much editing I did, I still felt like it was never going to get there. Probably just an excuse on my part. Fear of rejection sucks, though it’s probably something I’m going to have to get used to. Finally, I just decided that it was as good as it was going to get, for the moment, and I bit the bullet and sent it out. Of course, I sent it last night and got the return receipt this morning. So now I’m…

But damn, I *do* love me some bowler hats. Fascinating stuff, to be sure. Not remotely practical. And yet I’m sitting here making grabby fingers. Gypsy Moon…
