Winged Pigs and Strawberry Fields Forever

Posted in Connor, Lucy, winged pigs | 2 Comments
So we went strawberry picking on Sunday. It’s actually been a very long time since I’ve been fruit picking of any type – although maybe I got my fill in 8th grade. (I packed blueberries for a summer at a farm for the whopping amount of $3.87 an hour – w00t!)It was humid in the fields, but the kids really had a good time. Lucy in particular only wanted to sit there and eat the strawberries right off the vine. (“Can we eat now? Can we eat now?”). It’s an organic farm so except for a little dirt, there wasn’t much to worry about as far as pesticides and the rest. Connor also had fun – he brought his bug zoo box and tried to catch butterflies. No success that day, but we caught praying mantis babies on Monday, so that evens out. The farm itself (Great Country Farms) also… Read more

Those Pesky Side-Characters…

Posted in characters, terminator, writing | 1 Comment
This is half Terminator 4 review and half rumination on how minor characters in one’s book can interfere in the telling of a good story. (Small spoilers ahead). I saw the movie on Saturday, and I have to say that despite the majority of the reviews, I liked it. Yes, there were many issues, but I still dug the concept and it’s *way* better than T3. (And T1 and T2 are probably still my fav movies of all time – tho it’s a toss up between those and Alien(s)). One of the biggest issues with the T4 movie is that it couldn’t seem to figure out who it was supposed to be about. Suffice it to say, it really isn’t a John Connor movie, and from what I understand, JC was originally only supposed to be a minor character. The real “hero” character is that of Marcus Wright(Sam Worthington) and… Read more

It’s Thursday! Yay?

Posted in contest, craft, writing | Leave a comment
Ok, so the end of another crazy ass week approaches. Except for the pita that work has been with this migration it’s been pretty good. Well, that and my rejections, but I’ve stopped worrying about that. Printed out my reject emails and posted them on the wall at work. Inspiration at its best, I suppose. Chapter 1 has been reworked again. It’s shorter and mostly rearranged as opposed to rewritten. Some of the backstory has been removed, but I’ve reworked a lot of it back into the story elsewhere. Seriously, Chapter 1 has been the bane of my existence. The funniest thing? I’m right back where I started. Last year when I first started writing it – I had a few paragraphs of Abby and the *bam*, the incubus walks in the door. And then I made the mistake of showing people and I got a lot of – we… Read more

Rejection # 2!

Posted in rejection | Leave a comment
W00t. Actually don’t feel as bad about this one because I got a lousy vibe off the agent at the time. However, as far as rejections go, this one was pretty good too. My writing is good, my concept is fresh…but it’s not fast paced enough for Urban Fantasy. I did actually end up reworking my Chapter 1 this weekend. It’s not a rewrite – just a small reorg, and I think it really does help. So I regret having sent out what I had when I did, but not much point in crying over spilled milk now. All I can do is keep plugging away and see what happens. 🙂… Read more

Real

Posted in rejection | 2 Comments
“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.” “Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit. “Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.” That’s about the best I could come up with tonight. I got my first rejection today – which isn’t as bad as it seems. It was actually a very nice rejection note, so I’m rather grateful for that. Better than just a “not suited for our needs at this time” kind of thing. On one hand I’m kind of relieved. That first one is over and surprisingly not that bad. I mean, sure, it stings, but she did say I was talented, so hopefully that… Read more
