Beach, Day Two

Sunset from last night at the bay (200 yards away?). Really lovely, overall. I’m at the end of the dock there with Connor and Lucy is running just in front the camera. (We were getting our crabs. Between today and last night we had enough for crabcakes before dinner. Or at least mr myn and Pop-pop did. I won’t eat anything that comes from the sea. Sorry. The marine biologist in me is not fond of eating what basically amounts to underwater spiders.) Today was a sort of iffy day. Weather was gorgeous, so that was fine. My kids, however, were acting up. Tempers were definitely off. Not sure if that’s just us “adjusting” to being on vacation or a combination of stuff (i.e. kids up too late, eating too much crap, etc). Probably a bit of both. Beach, Day One :)

Vacation is always a strange thing for me. I have an extremely difficult time shutting down. Even getting on the road is hard. Not sure why. Something about getting yanked away from my internet, and my lack of ability to “be productive”, maybe. Sad, really, but there it is. Ironic, too. The majority of my friends are on-line these days. Going someplace where my ability to get online is so limited bothers me tremendously, for at least the first few hours. Call it the need to be needed, maybe. Like I’m afraid all my little on-line endeavors will fall apart without me or something. Which is bullshit, of course. The on-line world doesn’t cease to exist simply because I can’t get on it. After a while, that tension starts to slip away and I remember what it was like to have a life before internet. There’s a part of me… Read more

Raining and Pouring

It’s the little things that add up sometimes, I think. Lucy has been running a temp of about 104 for a few days now (and we just got back from the doc’s – all tests thus far are negative for strep, flu, etc, so we’re assuming it’s just a virus at this point). I stayed home with her yesterday, mostly curled up on the couch with her, watching Noggina and eating soup. A fairly quiet day, punctuated only by the fact that the AC decided to die at 5 minutes after 6. Guess when the HVAC company closes? Yes, that would be 6 pm, thanks for playing. *grumble* We ended up calling a 24 hour place and for the low, low price of $400 and several hours of waiting, it was fixed. And truthfully, had it just been the AC busted, I would have had us suck it up until… Read more

On Motherhood…

A while back, I was chatting with an online friend about the impossibility of fitting everything in that needs doing. She is a stepmother with older children and I’m a working mom. Indubitably the conversation turned to SAHMs and how they manage to get things done. My friend remarked that she didn’t feel particularly sorry for SAHMs – after all, staying home with one’s kids is a privelege that not everyone gets to have – and if they can’t get their stuff done, well, that’s their problem. I guess I can see that arguement…to a point. One could argue that having kids is a choice – and most of the time, it is. Sometimes’s it’s not. Sometimes it’s an accident. Sometimes the child is born with special needs, complicating the issue tremendously. Sometimes people leave the workforce because working and paying daycare at the same time doesn’t make financial sense.… Read more
