LokiPunk: We Write What We Want!

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , , , | 3 Comments
So I was surfing around during one of my class breaks today and wandered over to Jeffe’s blog – she’s actually guest posting today over at FF&P and talking about what it’s like when you write books that are cross-genre. And how disheartening it is to hear again and again from editors that they love your writing style, they love the story, but… …they can’t sell it because they don’t know how to market it. Or they don’t know where it will fit. Or whatever. Frankly, I’m getting a tad tired of hearing it. With the advent of ebooks getting so popular, I’m not sure if “shelf space” should be a deciding factor anymore. But I guess this is why I’m not a publisher. And this goes back to the post I wrote about my time at WFC – so, so easy for the established old guard to spout off… Read more

Just a quick note today during my break from training to announce that I’ve got Brush of Darkness holiday cards available now in my Zazzle store! (this lovely design is by Darchala, of course.)                 I’ve also got last years’s design still available too (by Jakface!)  … Read more

Monday Updates….mmmkay?

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , , , | Leave a comment
I’m in training all week for my “real life” job, so my internet socialization is probably going to be a bit sparse as a result – and that probably includes blogging for some of this week (unless people want blog posts about Exchange  Server 2010. Which I highly doubt.). I suspect my NaNo attempt has been completely derailed at this point as well – I’m in class all week this week and also at the end of the month – between that and the book release/con stuff/blog tour stuff? I’m pretty tapped out. I *am* still writing daily, just not as much as I should be for NaNo. Ah, well. Anyway, I’ll just throw up some fun stuff today – first off, the picture here is a fab design by Aimo – it’s up on Threaded and we’d love it if you could go vote for it! (It could end… Read more

Word-Whore ~ Fox and Willow Thursday

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , , | Leave a comment
Fox & Willow will actually be updated later on today – but this link will always take you to the latest page, so check back in a little while (probably sometimes this evening.) In the meantime I’m over at Word Whores today, talking about books and series and just how long is too long? (Heh. *Is* there such a thing?? ) Also, just a heads up that the author chat/Shindig I was supposed to host with Sandy Williams last week on our book release date was rescheduled to tonight – 7 PM, EST. RSVP here! (I might be a few minutes late – turns out the boy sproglet had a field trip today and won’t be back until 6:30 or so and I have to pick him up at his school. I’ll be as fast as I can.) And gah! I’ve been forgetting to put my links to my blog… Read more

How to Hijack a Genre

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , , , , , | 11 Comments
One of the panels I went to at WFC this past week was about Urban Fantasy – and specifically what sort of writing really makes up a UF story. (Charles de Lint, Tanya Huff, David G. Hartwell and Tim Powers were the panelists) There were some rather fascinating arguments being made as far as what was historical fantasy vs contemporary fantasy vs urban fantasy – and really, I think what it all comes down to is how the publishers choose to market the books more than anything else. But even so, you could see there was a definite line drawn in the sand between the “old school” UF authors and the fact that they really didn’t want to be associated with what’s being marketed as UF today. Even the description of the panel – The North American lineage of Urban Fantasy has been traced from Unknown Worlds, and the term was clearly… Read more
