Happy Halloween

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , , | Leave a comment
Happy Halloween! Long time no blog and all that, as per my usual, but to be fair I did have some real life issues over the last couple of months that took priority, including the unexpected passing my uncle, the start of the school year for the kids, etc etc. It’s always something. That being said, I’m super happy to announce I’ve got a short story in the new Tales From the Lake anthology! (Out Friday, link down below!) It’s my first real foray into writing horror, though it may be less horror and more disturbing melancholia, but in either case I’m super proud of it. So please check it out if you’re so inclined! (Especially if you’re into twisted mermaid tales). My particular story is titled A Dream Most Ancient and Alone, and it’s about a lake mermaid with a penchant for eating children,  who forms a tenuous friendship with… Read more

Hey guys – I have drawn the winners for the Magpie’s Fall giveaway, thanks to RaffleCopter and its random generator. (In the past I used to have my hedgehog pick the winners, but alas, poor Tumbleweed has been gone for quite a while, so this will have to do. ) Two winners were drawn and emails were sent , so check your inboxes. And if you really want to be sure, I also notified the winners in the comments in the previous post, so feel free to check there as well – I really loved reading everyone’s comments about their summers. If you didn’t win – no worries – I’ll probably do another giveaway in a bit – also if you are in the Baltimore area in November, I will be at World Fantasy Con and I believe there is a book signing on Friday night, so I’ll have my… Read more

A Bit Like the Ocean

So I finally got back from World Fantasy Con on Sunday. I know I tend to be fairly quiet about where I am via social media during these things. I should probably be better about it, but a lot of it is laziness on my side, plus I have a tendency to want to focus on the con itself without all the other stuff getting in the way. In my case, I ended up fighting off the beginnings of a shitty cold on the first evening and then getting completely slammed by a fibromyalgia flare on the last evening – enough that I was stuck in bed for 5 or 6 hours on Saturday and had a lot of trouble walking/socializing most of the day.  I also managed to tear my left calf muscle pretty badly on Sunday after I got home, so I’m just a bundle of joy  at the moment,… Read more

How to Hijack a Genre

One of the panels I went to at WFC this past week was about Urban Fantasy – and specifically what sort of writing really makes up a UF story. (Charles de Lint, Tanya Huff, David G. Hartwell and Tim Powers were the panelists) There were some rather fascinating arguments being made as far as what was historical fantasy vs contemporary fantasy vs urban fantasy – and really, I think what it all comes down to is how the publishers choose to market the books more than anything else. But even so, you could see there was a definite line drawn in the sand between the “old school” UF authors and the fact that they really didn’t want to be associated with what’s being marketed as UF today. Even the description of the panel – The North American lineage of Urban Fantasy has been traced from Unknown Worlds, and the term was clearly… Read more

Shelter From the Storm

Well, since the forecasters are basically making it sound the apocalypse is coming, figured I’d just mention where I’ll be over the next week or so, since who knows if I’ll have power after tomorrow. >_< So assuming all is zen with the electricity, here’s what’s going on: Saturday: 2:30 pm EST – online panel/chat at Coyote Con – The Good, The Bad, The Girly & The Manly – with me, Jeffe Kennedy, Carolyn Crane and Laura Bickle. It’s free, but you do need to register so you can log on to get into the chat. Tuesday – book release day! Huzzah! And I’m doing a live Shindig with Sandy Williams – bring your questions and webcam to join in the fun! 😀  It’s from 7 – 8PM, EST. Wed – Sun – I’ll be in Toronto for World Fantasy Con. I don’t know exactly what I’ll be doing each… Read more
