Happy New Year
I’m not one for making resolutions, actually. Not that I don’t have some things I want to change this upcoming year about my outlook – though I’m actually going to talk about that more on Thursday for my Word Whores post. So, where does that leave me here? Well, for starters, I can look back on the past year and wonder at the fact that I manage to publish two books, sell a short story and a comic book story…and start up/continue a comic book collaboration with someone who has become a pretty dear friend. (The fact that I still have my day job and my kids aren’t running wild with hedgehogs is an added bonus.) I did my share of cons, got a new tattoo, traveled about the country and hung out with a lot of very cool people. Yes we had a shower that sorta fell apart and…

Obviously I’ve been off the radar for a little while. Holiday stuff, mostly. Cleaning, baking, wrapping – all the usual trappings of family and food and too many people in close contact with each other for too long. Gifts that didn’t quite cut it. (Or in my case, gifts that didn’t happen. Seriously? I pre-order a specialty book for someone mid-November – signed, numbered and all that…knew it would get here after Christmas because it was a special order, etc…and just found out today that the website had the wrong god damned picture on it and they don’t have the special edition after all…and those special editions are sold out now everywhere else. *sigh*) And then there’s the laptop. See, my faithful little netbook is over 3 years old now. It’s slow. I spilled tea on it about 6 months ago. While it was still on. And now the Ctrl keys don’t…

Strong Women in UF

I’m over at SF Signal’s Mind Meld today, weighing in on the whole “strong women in UF” trope that is fairly prevalent in much of today’s UF books. Heh – it’s actually sort of funny, because when I set out to write A Brush of Darkness, I deliberately tried to avoid the whole “kick-ass lady in leather” concept – which is why Abby isn’t a slayer of any sort and why she’s so physically damaged. Not that there’s anything wrong with the books that have kick-ass ladies in them – I’d just read so many of those book recently that I didn’t really want to write one, if that makes any sense. As to the picture? That’s a shot of my piggy bank from when I was a child. With my dad selling the old house, I’ve now got a plethora of Really Old Stuff hanging around my house (which I will…

My Freaky Spine
Went to the doctor again today (scheduled a discogram for next month. Contrary to my hoped for belief, discograms do not actually involve male disco strippers. Alas. They involve needles probing the discs between my vertebrae to look for tears. Alas, alas.) Okay, so that’s going to suck and be painful, yadda yadda yadda. But seriously? At the top of that pic – do you see those little slanted bones that are a bit faded, coming out of my spine there? They look like little arms. I have extra ribs, yo. Little, floating, vestigial ribs just hanging out from a vertebra that probably shouldn’t have them. I’m growing wings, you guys! ** ** Not really. But I wish I was. >_<…

Word Whore ~ Fox and Willow Thursday
Been a while since I had one of these, but not a whole lot going on today. (Not counting the arrival of my back brace. Doctor was hoping it might help relieve some of the pressure on my spine. In truth I feel like I’m in a very ugly corset, at the moment. Not sure it’s helping, but I’ll give it a few weeks and see what happens. ) Actually, there is some funny stuff happening behind the scenes, but I’ll get to that later when I’ve got a few more details. (Not a new book or anything, just amusement for a good cause.) Anyway – the topic over at Word Whores this week is about using holidays as a plot device. Good? Bad? Ugly? As with everything else, YMMV. Though most theme stories aren’t really my cup of tea, I can definitely understand why some people like them. Also,…
