io9 Review

So the big news is that io9 reviewed Fox & Willow on Saturday – which is fabulous for us. As a self-published webcomic, getting any sort of publicity like this is sometimes very hard to come by. (And a special shout-out to Jane Kindred for helping us to get on their radar -thank you so much.) Of course, the offshoot is that I used up my 100k pageview /per month  limit on my stat tracker in about 24 hours. (That’s a *lot* of hits for us – and it’s been fun to watch the link be spread out to other sites like the Something Awful forums. Not quite viral or anything, but considering we haven’t been doing a huge amount for publicity, it’s pretty cool.) We Can Rebuild Her…

To be honest, I never really watched the show.  I vaguely remember seeing it on TV once in a while (along with The Six Million Dollar Man), but aside from the killer sound effect, coupled with the slow-mo, I don’t remember that much about it. Funny how moving everything slower somehow made it look more impressive on TV. When I hobble into the bathroom every morning because I can’t stand straight it doesn’t seem nearly as cool. Anyway, I ended up spending several hours waiting around the doctor’s office yesterday – everything was backed up since the snow the day before played havoc on people’s appointments. But  eventually I got back there and chatted with the neurologist. It sounds simple, but I’ve got one of those back issues that isn’t. And more importantly, there isn’t just one way to treat it. Nyumbani

Seeing as it’s a bit of a slow day today, I thought I’d bring some attention to a charity organization I used to be a part of. Nyumbani is the first and largest facility for HIV+ orphans in Kenya. In the past, I’ve done a fair bit of pro-bono work for them, including graphics and web design (though that’s long since passed out of my hands.) I even created a calendar the used for fund-raising one year. Anyway, it’s a fabulous organization that is doing wonderful things for children, both with the Nyumbani orphanage itself and through the work they do via Lea Toto, which is an outreach program for families who wish to provide care to HIV+ children within their own homes. I haven’t had the chance to visit myself, but I know a number of people who have – and everyone’s been touched at the bravery of these… Read more

Once Upon a Time

It’s no secret that I pretty much adore every fairy tale ever written. I had a copy of Grimm’s Fairy Tales as a kid that I wore the binding off of by the time I was in 5th grade. It was one of those 500 page monstrosities without any of the sanitized versions – full of all the eye-pecking and bloody shoes, incest, rape, murder…and the occasional happily ever after. (Whoever decided fairy tales were for kids clearly never read the things – there’s some pretty dark stuff when you start poking between the lines.) They’re a little harder for me to read these days – some of the writing feels stilted and while I appreciate much of what the stories do say, they leave so very much out – particularly when it comes to many of the female characters, most of whom are merely window dressing to be married… Read more
