Using What You Have aka Making Do

Connor made me take a picture of this yesterday. And I did – not only because it seemed like a good blog topic, but also because I giggle madly every time I look at it. Never mind it’s not even *his* Transformer. Never mind that said Transformer’s head is probably somewhere in the off-roading bowels of the mud in some distant field. Point is, said Transformer needed a head, so lego man got an upgrade. I find it very interesting that kid will usually make do with something, even if it’s not exactly right or perfect. In the interest of saving the universe, of course. Writers often do this too. Or at least I do. I’m not a huge researcher. Unless the plot hinges around a particular detail that *really* has be accurate *right* this second, I have a big tendency just to toss something in as a place holder.… Read more

The Beautiful People

I stumbled across this little bit of WTFkery yesterday. Even aside from the fact that it’s about one of the most egotistical things I’ve ever seen, the fact still remains that unless you’re directly bio-engineering the chromosomes, you can’t guarantee beauty. A few notes about the dating site – it’s known as beautifulpeople.com. No, I’m not putting a link to it, because I think it’s ridiculous. You can sign up for an account, but other members vote on your picture and stats – if you’re not deemed pretty enough, your membership gets turned down. And yes – they will kick you out if you get fat. It’s just sort of mind-numbing that people think this way. I mean, okay – I suppose it’s not surprising in some ways – after all there are always cliques everywhere you go – at school, in the office, whatever. But honestly, doesn’t it just… Read more

The Devil is in the Details

I got my cover art last week. Or at least the sketch. I can’t post it here yet, since it’s not technically for public consumption. (But soon!) And I’ll admit there were a few things I didn’t like, most of which have been remedied at the point, thanks to the art department at Pocket. (And thanks to Danielle for going to bat for me.) Some of them were nit-picky, and some were rather obvious – i.e. wrong eye color for the heroine, etc. And truthfully I think it’s probably hard for most writers to see someone else’s portrayal of their “vision.”  However, with the changes made, I’m feeling much better about it, even if it’s not quite what I expected. Part of my issue is that I’m very much used to the painted covers seen on most fantasy tomes – the ones that depict a scene from the book. But… Read more
