Sort of ironic that this week’s blog topic on Word Whores is about time, since that seems to be the one thing I just don’t have enough of. I hesitate to use the word burn-out to describe my feelings at the moment, but there it is. And it seems silly to talk about it sometimes – there’s always someone who has it harder. But then I read articles like this and I begin to wonder at just what it is that I am doing. I mean, no, I don’t want to raise my kids that way…but I do feel as though I’m doing them a bit of a disservice with the way things are going. Some days I feel so utterly wrapped up in my own doings and constantly trying to catch up with everything that I cannot help but think they’re going to look back years from now and think…

Contesting the Contests
Thanks to @katiebabs for the picture today – after writing about the daily adventures of an underwear-rolling unicorn, it just felt really, really appropriate. Anyway, the main point today was the fact that I got into a bit of a mailing list tiff over which writing contests were “worthy” of being entered. And I had argued that it depended a bit on what your goals are for entering the contest. Some people want the feedback. Some want the chance of getting the manuscript in front of an agent or an editor. Sometimes it’s all about winning the award – and there are several that do come with more prestige, or actual prize money or the cover of a convention fee. One line of argument was the fact that, in the case of RWA contests in particular, they cost quite a bit – sometimes upwards of $20….so does that mean that by…

Word Whore Post! and BoD Excerpt!
I’m over at Word-Whores today talking a bit about courtesans and a rather round-about way of comparing them to writers. It’s sort of rambly. (Thursdays will be my normal day over there from now on, so I’ll be doing a bit of cross-posting, I think.) Also I’ve got an excerpt from A Brush of Darkness up on my author site now if anyone is interested. 🙂 Also, also – killer review of Brush of Darkness over at Fresh Fiction today!…

Gifts of Awesomesauce

There is very little out there as awesome as flannel Hello Kitty pajamas. (These were a lovely gift from fellow word-whore, Kristine Krantz, last week when she came for a visit. There are pants to go with them, but Lucy appears to have absconded with them into parts unknown.) Kristine, btw? Totally awesome person. 🙂 On the other hand? Danielle Poiesz also sent me a little something, and truthfully, I’m not sure even HK Pjs can stand up to this –> Yes. That is a winged unicorn mug. Yes, the unicorn is crapping out cupcakes. I will be the most awesomesauce author EVAH whilst I sit and write on my weekends, surrounded in Hello Kitty warmth and sipping tea from my cupcake crapping unicorn mug. I’m not sure it gets much better than that. Also, congrats to Rachel Firask for winning a signed copy of Brush of Darkness yesterday!…
