The Story Stays the Same
I finished reading a book today based on a fairy tale. Not really all that unusual – I’ve been a major fan of the original classics since I was little and I tend to enjoy a good retelling. There’s something about a fresh perspective that can bring an old story back to life…or make you think about it differently than you used to. Still, I hesitated even picking this one up – not because of the fairy tale itself – but because it’s one that I had hoped to maybe retell myself. And so I debated for a few days. For one thing, I couldn’t help but wonder if the author was going to tell it the way *I* wanted to tell it. Would she do it better? Would she think of something I hadn’t thought of? And if she had, should I even bother with trying to do my…

A Stitch in Time

Before I seriously started pursuing the writing gig, I actually had hobbies. (Aside from gaming, believe it or not). One of those was Cross Stitching, which I’ve been doing since I was in 6th grade. Now, the trademarks of a good cross stitcher is shown in the way the stitches are done. Traditionally, the back should look nearly as good as the front. Alas, mine never have, but as long as the front looks good, I’m pretty happy. Anyway, I started going through my craft bin this morning and realized how many projects I have that I’ve never started, and probably never will at this point. I’ve been collecting patterns as I go since they don’t always hang around, and there’s nothing more frustrating than falling in love with a design and then not being able to do it five years later when you’re finally ready for it. So, I…

You know, today was a beautiful day. Great temps. Lovely sunlight. Green, green grass. Butterflies and birds and all that. And truly, my greatest wish was to just get in the car and randomly take a drive out in the country. Didn’t work that way, unfortunately, though I can’t really tell you why. Just one of those days, I guess. Connor is going through a growth spurt (literally, he’s drinking milk about every ten minutes. It’s pretty unreal) and seemed to need to tell me whenever he drank some. Every. Single. Time. Lucy was full of whining for no reason than I could figure out except that she’s four. And a girl. Even when I took the kids to the park for a while it seemed like nothing really satisfied them. (Apparently walking on the wrong side of the wobbly troll bridge is a sign of the apocalypse, and should…

Word Whore Thursday
I’m over at Word-Whores today, where the theme this week is unusual pets. (So of course, I’m focusing on the hedgehog.) Otherwise things are holding at a steady state, although I’ve got a few things behind the scenes that I’m really hoping for (more about that if/when it does happen.) I am also fleshing out some odds and ends in the hopes that a Melanie story will make an appearance in a possible upcoming anthology. Also, I’ve finally ordered bookplates. If all goes well, I should have them by next week, and I’ll be happy to send them out for a SASE.…
