Flash Fiction Blast from the Past

A comment earlier this week (from my friend Bluenail, who used to run an awesome CyberPunk PbP back at my gaming site), had my wheels clicking a bit, since she specifically mentioned the character I used to play there. I honestly hadn’t given the game or the character much thought in a while (this was back in 2007!), but I looked up the original intro chunk I had written for her and you know what? It’s actually kind of good. Oddly enough, it’s in 1st person present. Again. WTF is up with me and flash in that sort of PoV? (And yes, I have comma issues – I’m very much aware of that. Whither the YA of my Youth?

Jeffe and I were speculating the other day as to whether or not the YA genre actually existed when we were growing up (a nebulous period in the 70’s and 80’s, to be specific.) We took it to Twitter and the general consensus was that it didn’t. I started reading at a pretty early age. I know some of my favorites in 3rd and 4th grade were things like Island of the Blue Dolphins, The Little Princess and The Secret Garden…but after that things get a bit hazy. At some point I was handed Piers Anthony’s Xanth series, because I got mono in 4th grade and I distinctly remember not being allowed to participate in recess in the months that followed (which meant a lot of reading.) I remember reading Ogre, Ogre in May of that year, which was the 8th book in that series. Did I get all of his puns?… Read more

Bootlegged!

Well…not really. I just found it dreadfully amusing that one of my ARCs managed to find its way to ebay last week (and actually had 3 bidders on it!) I’m mostly flattered, though there’s a tiny bit of righteous indignity to it too. (What, doesn’t the “Not for resale label” mean anything??? Integrity, people!) And it’s not like I’ll ever know who it was that put it up there – I sent out ARCs, my agent sent out ARCs, my editor sent out ARCs, my publicist sent out ARCs…and yeah, you get the picture. Could have come from anywhere – and frankly, it doesn’t matter. Still, it’s kind of cool in a way. I honestly wouldn’t have thought anyone would remotely think about bidding on a book by a n00b author. (Pirating would be another thing all together – I imagine there are all sorts of people that will download… Read more
