Slang a Lang a Ding Dong
Seeing as I’m home with a sick kid today, just a quick post about another writing resource dealing with language. It’s very similar to the Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, but in some ways it’s much better laid out. DotVT is essentially just that – a dictionary, which makes it a little hard if you’re looking for something specific. Slang Down the Ages is actually set up in chapters. There’s the usual suspects, dealing with sex, male and female body parts, bodily functions and insults – but there’s also some great stuff about different types of food, speech, clothing, death and some of the more common types of jobs (including prostitution). Now, a small word of warning – there are several chapters dealing with different ethnic groups and sexual orientations. A lot of it is offensive to the more modern day sensibilities – although I suppose that’s pretty much the point when it…

Thrill Me With Your Acumen

I’ll admit I’m not much of a reviewer. Not of books or music or movies, or really anything else. Not because I don’t have an opinion, but I can’t be bothered to make the effort. (I probably should, particularly on GoodReads, but that’s another story.) If a reviewer likes or dislikes something, I want to know why. What was it that struck him or her as good, or great, or just plain terrible? I understand that things can’t always be explained. Sometimes things just don’t resonate for whatever reason, and that’s fine too. One can simply say, “I didn’t like it.” But being a reviewer doesn’t give you the right to bash. Personal blogs may be a different matter, but if I read a review on a “professional” site, then I really to expect that review to have at least a modicum of decorum. Which brings me to the crux…

Just a quick note to say how completely overwhelmed I am by all the awesome notes on Twitter and Facebook. You all rock and I’m so terribly, terribly grateful. That being said, I completely suck at baking, apparently. Or maybe it’s something else. mr myn was supposed to work today. Note I said *supposed to.* Note that he is currently not at work. You may infer from that what you will. 1) mr myn ran to the store this morning. Bought cake mix. I made said cake. It baked. It was lovely. Cake completely crumpled out of the Bundt pan after cooling and became a big hot mess. 2) mr myn ran back out to the store. Bought more mix. Bought Baker’s Joy for inside of Bundt pan. Bought a different brand of cake which required less butter and water. Which I did not read. Cake did not make it…

Stumbled across this little gem of a site last night. It’s called Edible. And you know, I guess I’m alright if people want to eat chocolate covered ants or think that a hornet in honey is some sort of aphrodisiac. But coffee, made from cherry pits? From cherries that were eaten by a civet cat? That said cat then crapped out? That were then collected from the civet cat’s feces and cleaned by the natives? *shudders* Yeah, how do you sign up for *that* job? According the website, civet ass dropping coffee is: THE RAREST COFFEE IN EXISTENCE UNIQUE DELICATE FLAVOUR AFTER FERMENTATION IN THE CIVET’S DIGESTIVE SYSTEM ONLY 500 KG’S OF THIS COFFEE ARE FOUND EACH YEAR Yum! They also have weasel regurgitated coffee. And tea made from leaves picked by specially trained monkeys.…

What Price, Purity?

Warning: This is a bit of a rant, though I’ll try to keep it toned down. Much of it can be attributed to this article on the Washington Post, about the “re-virgination of women in China.” More specifically, this quote: Some men who were interviewed agreed about the importance of finding a virgin. “I really care about virginity,” said Xia Yang, product manager for a technology company. “If you go to buy a cellphone, of course you’d want to buy a new cellphone. Who would spend the same amount of money to buy an old cellphone that’s been used for two years?” Yeah. And then my head exploded. Can someone *please* explain to me why a woman’s sole value is placed squarely on the existence (or lack thereof) of a membrane? I mean, yes, the virginity thing is a common trope for so many historical romances – how the heroine…
