The Sound of Silence
I can’t sing. At all. Or at least not much. If I play a note on the piano I can match the pitch easily enough, but I can’t do much else with it. My mother couldn’t sing, but her parents could, as can at least one of my aunts. And my father. And *his* mother. It’s dreadfully unfair. I’m not asking for much really. I don’t need to go on American Idol. I’d just like to be able to hold a tune for longer than 10 seconds before I go off key. I can’t even whistle. The irony of it is that I’ve had several people tell me I sound like I should be an opera singer. Which would be awesome. Of course, I also had at least one ex-boyfriend tell me to stop trying to sing. Ever. And some mean boy in 8th grade homeroom told me he hated…

The Fantasy of Desire

I can fall in love at the drop of a hat. And I do pretty much every day in some form or another. Or maybe I just think I do. It doesn’t take much – an exotic accent, a unique skill, windswept hair, whatever. It’s a mindless sort of love though. It doesn’t require any real commitment or knowledge or even the ability to have a functional conversation – because it’s purely fantasy. But let’s be honest – there’s a sort of safety in falling in love with the unattainable. Whether it’s a character in a book or a movie or a random celebrity, you’re pretty much free to imagine whatever scenario you like without worries of any sort of repercussion. There’s no bad breath or jock itch in my dreams, anyway. And probably not yours, either. I suppose that’s the broader appeal in romance books – for a reader…

Resolution? Meh. Revolution!

I’ve never been one for resolutions, New Year’s or otherwise. Maybe it’s because they never really worked for me. Or if they did, they only worked for a short period. There’s something sort of odd about convincing myself I would start changing my behavior on x date. Like at this one arbitrary moment in time, I would wiggle my nose and all my bad habits would be gone. Which is bullshit, of course. Take weight loss, for example. I’d pussyfooted around with different diets over the years to try to lose the extra baby weight I’d gained, but I usually couldn’t get through more than a few weeks (or in the case of an actual goal – i.e. vacation, as soon as I got back from said event, it would be back to stuffing myself with mac & cheese). The long and short of it is that I had to…

Beginnings and Endings and Other Assorted Ramblings

As stated before, I tend to get melancholy at the end of the year, which is just another way of saying I have to go back to work tomorrow and that makes me rather pissy. I’ve had a week or so off now, and while I did get some writing done, it certainly wasn’t as much as I could have. Which is fine. I think that for newbie writers in particular, it’s very easy to get swept up in the rushing need to be “on” all the time. (At least, it does for me). Even when I started working in an office, I found myself feeling guilty for spending any free time doing anything other than work…as though I was less than I could be if I wasn’t “being productive.” I’ve tried to break that cycle a bit over the last few weeks – attempting to ease down from the…
