Vibrator WTFkery

It always sort of cracks me up that for all that people of the Victorian age seemed to be such uptight prudes, they certainly had some weird practices when it came to curing feminine “hysteria.” I’m actually trying to imagine a world where sexually unsatisfied women would go to their doctor complaining of anxiety, sexual fantasies and shortness of breath – and the solution would be for the doc to manually frig them to orgasm. Apparently this was very tiring to the doctors (and it would often take an hour or more to produce the desired effect. Incidentally, WTF was up with men during this time? An hour? Really?) Part of me would have imagined this was some dreadfully pervy and sordid affair – ladies heading out for tea and a twiddle during their daily constitutional, but no…the docs apparently saw it merely a type of chore and often tried to pan… Read more

Chill Out Over Change

Change is always hard. (And yes, I’m still a bit kerfluffled about the editor change. I’ll get over it.) But as difficult as an actual change may be, why is it that so often its mere suggestion can turn normally rational people into knee-jerk reactionaries? At some point last year, the FF&P group I’m in (and currently the webmaster for. Sort of. Not for much longer), decided to take a look at the Yahoo mailing list we were using. FF&P has over 600 members – and that can lead to a *lot* of email messages, even on digest. Plus, we were getting some complaints via private emails that not everyone was happy with the way things were becoming so social. We had a lot of discussion about what constituted “promo” – i.e. the posts that continually shout out to the members to go read blogs/buy my book/use this service. (In some… Read more

Bacon Bowls and Updates

Yes, that is a bowl made out of bacon. I can think of few things more perfect than a bowl made of bacon, particularly this morning. First, I want to give a massive shout out to Simon Larter for getting a short story published in this Friday’s upcoming edition of Short Story America. Congrats, my friend. Second – had an awesome lunch yesterday with Sara McClung, a local writer that I’ve been meaning to get together and hang with for ages. She is awesome and I just want to thank her for the company and awesome conversation over dumplings at PF Chang’s. (And can’t wait to do the David Garrett Meet & Greet with her in Feb!) Third, I’m unfortunately going to have to announce that Danielle Poiesz is no longer my awesomesauce editor. (She’s still full of awesomesauce, actually…just not in the world of editing.)
