Metamorphosis

Funny thing, online handles. For the last seven years or so, I’ve gone almost exclusively by the online name of mynfel. That doesn’t mean every mynfel you see out there is me (although most of them probably are…however there’s a live journal and a myspace page out there that aren’t mine, among others.) The name itself isn’t even mine – mynfel is a character created by Charles de Lint from a book entitled Yarrow. She’s a deer woman and barely says anything – in fact, she’s hardly in the book at all – but she’s probably one of the most important things about it..  I fell in love with the concept of her character and adopted the name for my online dealings. Taming the Hedgehog

It’s come to my attention that I may have adopted a Grumpy Hedgehog. After four weeks of ownership, I have concluded that Tumbleweed is quite possibly as prickly on the inside as she is on the outside. Makes it hard for a cuddle. However, I have noticed that when I put her in her big pink hamster ball, she comes out and runs all around without any fear at all. (I smell a metaphor here. Stay tuned tomorrow.) Alas, the main point to this post is that I actually decided to take her to the vet on Saturday. (Lucky me, we have an exotic vet group right up the street.) Even if she was grumpy for the sake of being grumpy, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to at least get a baseline on her in case anything appeared to be wrong in the future. Frontloading the Words

I’m not even sure if frontloading is a real word, at least in the sense that I’m using it. I’ve noticed over the last few weeks that often times I’ll stop writing before I’ve run out of words. ** Which might sound a little strange, until I realized I’m doing it so I’ve got an easy start the next day. If I’ve already got something to work with, it makes the rest of it that much easier. Or that’s the theory, anyway. Sometimes I just put down that bit of a scene and then twiddle my thumbs for a while as I figure out where to go next. Panster issues, for certain. I’ve mentioned before I do my best brainstorming in the shower. On some days (if I’m home alone), and I’m stuck, it’s not uncommon for me to take three or more, although one is usually more than enough.… Read more
