1 Reason Why

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , , , , | 2 Comments
If you’re a gamer, you’re probably aware that the Twitterverse exploded over the last few days about sexism in gaming. Which, if you’re a female gamer, you’re probably going, “Well, duh.” There’s actually three different Twitter hashtags – #1ReasonWhy (as in 1 reason why it sucks to be a woman in the gaming industry. Sad stuff here, and some of the usual trolls, so be warned.) On the brighter side, two happy hashtags resulted – the #1ReasonMentors, which is people looking for and volunteering to be gaming industry mentors. If you’re looking to get more info and you’ve been intimidated in the past, this might be a good place to start. Also check out #1ReasonToBe for reasons WHY women are a part of the gaming industry. The thing is, I sort of take issue with people saying how this hashtag is exposing the dark underbelly of sexism in gaming. It’s always… Read more

Little Fish

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , , | 1 Comment
I realize I haven’t been blogging as much the last few weeks. This whole month has been a bit of a time cluster honestly, and the rest of this week isn’t going to be much better. I’m starting a new round of training for work. It’s a virtual classroom and all, but I find my brain basically getting pretty fried by the end of the day and it doesn’t leave me very motivated to do anything on the computer, let alone blog. Plus, this is the first time in over three years that I haven’t been under a deadline of some sort. It’s a weird and slightly discombobulated feeling. And I’m working on this new project as I can (NaNo just didn’t happen the way it should have), but I’ve been putting this awful sort of undue pressure on myself to make it Good. Whatever Good really means. Just that… Read more

Slumming with the Sims

Posted in blog | Tagged , | 2 Comments
I fired up the Sims 3 this past weekend for the first time in a while. I’d bought the latest expansion packs but had never found the time to install them. It took me a while to get everything working – a lot of mods I’d previously installed were broken and I’ve got some patches to get rid of things like intro video and to kill the nude mosiac. (The sims aren’t anatomically correct, per se, but in a normal game every time a sim goes to the bathroom or takes a shower, there’s a blur effect that gets put over them. I find that annoying, so I remove it – but each time a new update to the game comes out, the nude mod tends to break.) Anyway, I got it working and then I invited Lucy to help me create some family members. I have the supernatural expansion,… Read more

Monday WTFkery

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , | 4 Comments
So, yeah. Been a while since I’ve posted a good bit of wtfkery and with the holidays coming up and all…what better than a usb drive disguised as a tampon? Even better, you can order them in different sizes – 2 GB, 4 GB and 8 GB. And yes, the web site indicates the size difference by the flow rate. As you do. But yeah, I’d totally use one. On a completely unrelated note, the new Fox   & Willow is up today, tampon free, as always.… Read more

LokiPunk: We Write What We Want!

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , , , | 3 Comments
So I was surfing around during one of my class breaks today and wandered over to Jeffe’s blog – she’s actually guest posting today over at FF&P and talking about what it’s like when you write books that are cross-genre. And how disheartening it is to hear again and again from editors that they love your writing style, they love the story, but… …they can’t sell it because they don’t know how to market it. Or they don’t know where it will fit. Or whatever. Frankly, I’m getting a tad tired of hearing it. With the advent of ebooks getting so popular, I’m not sure if “shelf space” should be a deciding factor anymore. But I guess this is why I’m not a publisher. And this goes back to the post I wrote about my time at WFC – so, so easy for the established old guard to spout off… Read more
