Beach, Day Three

Posted in Connor, lbi, Lucy, rambling, vacation | Leave a comment
I seem to have become that which I most detest…a tourist. Never mind that most people are tourists when they go places. I was raised here on LBI, more or less – at least, during the summers. My grandmother had a tiny Cape Cod on Beach Haven Terrace, approximately 7 houses from the beach. During the big storm in the 60’s, the ocean washed away every house in front of hers, stopping only to let the waves lap over the front stoop. I spent nearly every weekend there for as long as I could remember, and honestly, if you’ve never fallen asleep to the sound of the Atlantic hitting the sand, then I am sorry for you. Some time later, my parents bought the house I’m in right now – a slightly bigger Cape Cod, all for the low, low price of $70k- probably about 25 years ago. They rented… Read more

The Sixth Sense

You know, I’d like this to be about how I can talk to dead people, or see into the future or that I’ve got massive powers of telekinesis. (Okay, actually I do think I have a touch of clairaudience and I’m pretty sure I’ve done a little astral travel now and then. And I’ve *definitely* had sleep paralysis, but I don’t think that counts. Either way, I digress). But no. This is more along the lines of how my kids know when I’m trying to sleep in. You know, when you’ve been up until 2 or 3 either writing, or editing, or reading, or playing WoW or whatever. And you’re thinking, well at least tomorrow is Saturday. I can sleep in. But, no. No, you can’t. It’s 6 am, and I hear a “thud, thud, thud, thud” coming down the hallway. “Mom. Will you come downstairs with me?” “No. I’m… Read more

Winged Pigs and Strawberry Fields Forever

Posted in Connor, Lucy, winged pigs | 2 Comments
So we went strawberry picking on Sunday. It’s actually been a very long time since I’ve been fruit picking of any type – although maybe I got my fill in 8th grade. (I packed blueberries for a summer at a farm for the whopping amount of $3.87 an hour – w00t!)It was humid in the fields, but the kids really had a good time. Lucy in particular only wanted to sit there and eat the strawberries right off the vine. (“Can we eat now? Can we eat now?”). It’s an organic farm so except for a little dirt, there wasn’t much to worry about as far as pesticides and the rest. Connor also had fun – he brought his bug zoo box and tried to catch butterflies. No success that day, but we caught praying mantis babies on Monday, so that evens out. The farm itself (Great Country Farms) also… Read more

What is Home?

Posted in Connor, home, house | 3 Comments
Been looking around my house a lot lately, trying to figure out why I’ve never really felt comfortable there. Even in our last house, I always felt like I was “visiting”. (Well, except for the dirty diapers and all that), but it’s a strange feeling to come home and think there’s some place else you belong. And I don’t mean that family-wise. Just that it doesn’t feel like *mine*. I sat and thought about it a bit, and I realized that so much of what we have – the furniture, the pictures, the decorative “stuff” that’s hanging about in bits and pieces – isn’t mine at all. And it never was. I’ve never really been furniture driven, for example. I like to look at it, but that’s about it. Mr myn loves window shopping for stuff – so, when it came down to it, for the most part I let… Read more

Ye Ye and kids…

Posted in Connor, Grandpa, Lucy | 2 Comments
Thought I’d throw these up here today. Daddy Pang has Parkinson’s, so it’s hard to sometimes get a good picture these days. These were taken last month, but I really love them – it looks like he’s his old self, at least for a few moments. 🙂… Read more
