Organization
I had a different post planned for today, but Blogger just ate it. Which irritates me, hence the picture. (And it’s a good fit for my muse this week too, honestly.) At any rate, the original finely crafted piece was about my complete and utter lack of any ability to organize anything. Hell, one might argue that if I were more organized I would have written the original post in Word or something, but I’m a blog-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kinda girl, I guess. So now that we have proof that I’m an unorganized idiot, we’ll just move right along into something else – namely my marketing plan, or lack thereof. (I’m spotting a trend here.) I’m hitting the moment in time where I really have to start thinking about how I’m going to get the word out about my book. It’s almost like a perfect vacuum of sorts- but I have to be careful.…

The End…It Comes Soon.
Or soon enough, anyway. I had set a sort of internal deadline to get the draft of the book done this weekend. And I waltzed right past it in a swirl of two children’s birthday parties, two sets of play dates and some much needed bathroom cleaning. However, I’m dreadfully close. I know this because of how hard it has suddenly become. (And how eager I suddenly seem to be to clean my bathroom. Like having a pretty toilet will somehow make the writing better. Yes, there are some days I want to slap my inner muse silly at her procrastination techniques.) Maybe it’s a mental thing or something having to do with letting go. But there it is. Part of is the scene I’ve been struggling with. Usually when I have to work this hard at a particular bit it either means I’m trying to force something – i.e. the characters…

Bacon Bowls and Updates
Yes, that is a bowl made out of bacon. I can think of few things more perfect than a bowl made of bacon, particularly this morning. First, I want to give a massive shout out to Simon Larter for getting a short story published in this Friday’s upcoming edition of Short Story America. Congrats, my friend. Second – had an awesome lunch yesterday with Sara McClung, a local writer that I’ve been meaning to get together and hang with for ages. She is awesome and I just want to thank her for the company and awesome conversation over dumplings at PF Chang’s. (And can’t wait to do the David Garrett Meet & Greet with her in Feb!) Third, I’m unfortunately going to have to announce that Danielle Poiesz is no longer my awesomesauce editor. (She’s still full of awesomesauce, actually…just not in the world of editing.) I won’t say I’m…

Cliffhanging
So I had a mild epiphany this weekend. Book 2 requires a cliffhanger. Not that that was something I actually planned on. I can even dig up my outline that I turned into my editor a few months ago. There’s an actual ending there. It’s sort of neatly wrapped up, even. One of the glories of being a panster, I guess – tangents can wind you around and take you some where entirely different. But the last week or so, (after discussing it with several other writer friends), I’ve come to realize that part of what’s been making me drag my feet a bit is that it’s just too much. Too much story to wrap up in 10k – not neatly, anyway. And I feel like I would be doing the story a disservice to rush it – plus I’ve got enough potential material to take me 1/3 of the way…

Blurbage
The final cover for Brush of Darkness was released the other day – not that anything about it has really changed – but now I’ve got a blurb on the cover. (From Kelly Gay, in fact. Go read her The Better Part of Darkness series – you won’t be disappointed. She’s got a tasty siren man. NOM) The idea of blurbing has always sort of amused me. It’s nice because you’ve got a bit of cross-promotion thing going on for the other author (especially if said author quote ends up on the cover). On the other hand, it’s probably why so many authors have to be careful where their name ends up. If the book turns out to be a stinker or has some sort of controversy attached to it then it may not be the best thing to have your name attached to. Also, if your blurbs end up…
