NaNoWriMo Advice
I’m not writing NaNoWriMo this year – my schedule just doesn’t allow for it (and deadlines for paid writing have to come first.) That being said, I figured I’d give out what little bit of advice I figured out when I participated last year. 1) You get out of it what you put into it. If your goal is to crank out those 50k and then sit back when you’re done, that’s one thing. If you’re looking to kick-start a story or start up the good habit of writing every day, that’s another thing all together. 50k isn’t a novel by any stretch, but if participating in NaNo helps you in the long term, then that might be a better goal than just finishing up with all the words. 2) Writing in packs: This works for some people, and there can be something wonderful about a group energy – comparing…

I’ve never made it a secret about just how much I adore Stephanie Pui-Mun Law‘s work, particularly her new Shadowscapes Tarot. I’ve got two sets of the decks (the regular and the special edition set which includes the Happy Squirrel card as well as a custom drawn sketch), her book on the Major Arcana, and now I’ve just received her book on the Minor Arcana as well. For both books I went ahead and splurged on the special edition, which basically just includes her signature and a custom sketch (of her choice on the inside.) If I had the money I’d look at getting some of her originals, but with the medical stuff starting to pile on for those prolo-shots, I can’t really justify that right now. However, I do want to say that these books are just beautiful. They’re full of extra sketches and her notes on how she went…

Marketing 101
I’ll admit I don’t know much about the whole marketing/promo scheme of things when it comes to books. I’m familiar with going to cons and finding row upon row of tables stocked with all kinds of things – bookmarks, postcards, light-up boobies, pens, feathers, candy…anything and everything to get people to stop and pick them up, on the off chance another book might get sold. Of course, the big question here is does such marketing actually work? And no one really seems to know the answer. Plenty of people insist that it does and plenty don’t. We’ve all heard stories of writers who spent a small fortune on marketing gewgaws that seemed to make no difference…and then did almost no marketing at all next time around and sold a ton. Was it because of the venue? Or perhaps nothing more than the fact that by the second book, people knew…
