Do-Si-Do

I wish I was talking about the cookies. Sometimes writing is a lot like square dancing. Move a little here. A little there. Next thing you know you’ve come full circle and maybe you’re back where you started. This past weekend I got hung up on a scene. It’s one of those times where it’s a bummer being a panster. It caught me a little off guard because usually when I get stuck I tend to just jot down a quick note of what I need to change when I come back for edits and keep plugging away as though I’ve already made that change. But this time around that wasn’t working. The overall concept of the scene was okay, but eventually I realized it needed to be reversed.  Part of that is because I’d written myself into a corner, but also the balance of the action was skewed. Tension… Read more

Edit. Rewrite. Polish. Repeat as Needed.

Not much of a post today – it’s lousy on the pain scale. Don’t know if it’s a result of traveling or what, but I’m not happy about it. (And for me to have taken painkillers 3 days in a row is NOT a good sign. I generally avoid most medications, but the pain and stiffness have been brutal. I go to the back doc tomorrow – we’ll see what happens. I suspect he’ll try another injection of sorts, but if I don’t get any relief, I’m going to suggest we do a discogram – which will hurt, but might give us some real answers as to what’s going on.) Anyway, not to ramble on about my back issues, my main thought here was actually how nice it was to go back to that short story after a week of leaving it fallow…and discovering it was better than I thought.… Read more

Vision to the Voice

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , , , | Leave a comment
I finally wrapped up the first chapter of something new the other night. I let a few people read it and the overall feedback was good, but the more I looked at it, the less happy I was. So…I’m starting it over. Which is odd, because I’m a big fan of at least getting a full draft done before I start mucking with everything (otherwise it’s way too easy to fall into the habit of the constant edit/rewrite. I don’t want to go there.) But I do think a story has a better chance at successfully being told if the “voice” is consistent with the muse. Part of my issue may be because I’ve spent three years in Abby’s head. It’s hard for me not to look at a new story and not see her in there. As much as I love writing her, this isn’t her story or her… Read more

A Sliver of Shadow: First Pass Pages

Posted in blog | Tagged , , | 1 Comment
So the first pass pages for A Sliver of Shadow came in yesterday. (I arranged them in a nice pile there for the picture, simply because that’s what my thought process looks like, at the moment. BLARGH) For those of you who might not be aware, FPP are when the publisher sends you a print-out of the book – essentially an unbound galley. It’s typeset so you can see how everything will be laid out in the final printing. (There’s a nice Holy Crap! I’ve written a book! moment in there too…) It’s an author’s last chance to read it and make (small) changes. Typos, continuity mistakes, remove a sentence, add a sentence – but as a whole, the book is officially done.  (Although someone needs to look at the layout of page 61 – wow is it ever gorked up. Don’t know if it’s a printer error or setup error,… Read more

Whittle Away

Posted in blog | Tagged , | Leave a comment
Third day of being sick and second day of heavy rains and flooding, so it’s another day at home for me. (School was canceled for the kids and mr myn was kept overnight because things were so bad in his area – super deep water, cars abandoned everywhere, end of days, the usual.) Anyway, I managed to get through my first round of copy edits last night. I won’t call them officially done until I send them in, but I managed to fix a lot of small things, as well as add/delete some extra scenes that will become more important later on. (Problem with writing a series is that some things don’t come to light until you’re writing the next book – I’m just happy I’ve still got the time to go back and lay a few breadcrumbs.) So, I’ll run through the edits again this weekend. I’ve started to… Read more
