Fox in a Box

Posted in blog | Tagged , , | 4 Comments
So if you’ve been following me on Twitter or Facebook at all, you’ve probably seen me talk about the fox living on my deck. In the insulated cat house, no less. Only the thing is? I don’t have one fox. I apparently have two. Both with mange. The pictures I have are of the first fox (whom I have dubbed Foxy Lady). To be honest, except for this one day I haven’t seen her again. She popped up on the deck to eat up some leftover cat food the cats hadn’t eaten. And then she jumped into the flower box on the deck rail (behind the grill) and sunbathed and scratched for about 2 hours. So the next night when I startled something out of the cat house right next to the grill, I assumed it was her since I didn’t get a good look at whatever ran off.  But… Read more

Authors After Dark Schedule

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , | 3 Comments
Putting this up a few days early, just in case anyone wants to mark their calendars. 😉 I’ll be getting into New Orleans Wednesday afternoon and bailing early Sunday morning, but otherwise my overall Authors After Dark schedule is this: Thursday:  11 – 12 – Panel: Light Paranormal 12 – 1 – Bookie Awards lunch (I’m up for 5, yo!) 4 -5  – Panel: Secret Sauce: Authors Reveal Their Favorite Tricks Friday: 10 – 11 – Panel: The Reader Responsibility: How to Keep Your Favorite Authors on the Shelves Saturday: 2 – 4 – Book Signing (open to the public!) – I’m giving away special swag for this one. Secret swag. Oh my. >_< So it’s a pretty laid back schedule for me – I am hoping to do some touristy things –  if people are interested, maybe we can do an impromptu cemetery tour or something. 😀 Also, the… Read more

Word-Whore ~ Fox and Willow Thursday

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , | Leave a comment
Just a quick note to mention I’m over at Word Whores today – this week the theme has been about women writers in Sci-Fi and the “boy’s club” mentality that continues to be a part of the fandoms. It’s been a really great week so far, full of excellent points and discussion, so it’s definitely worth a read. Fox & Willow also updates today, and on a side note, I finally finished the rough draft for a short story for an upcoming anthology. (Of course it’s 1000 words too long, but that’s what editing and polishing is for. Hopefully I can whittle that down some. Gonna take a few days off of it to get some web design side jobs done and then tackle it again next week. Maybe during travel time for AAD.)… Read more

Author Q & A: Things You Should Know. And Maybe Shouldn’t Ask.

Posted in blog | Tagged , , | 6 Comments
Sometimes being a published author is a bit like being an animal in a zoo, particularly when it comes to family and friends. And I get that. There’s a certain mystique to being published  – one that’s being eroded on a daily basis, but for people who aren’t in the book industry in some fashion, it seems more mysterious as it is. But it also leads to questions and assumptions that are sometimes difficult to answer. Moreso because a lot of people don’t really want the whole truth. They want to hear about how there’s some magical formula that leads to instant success. Anyway, here’s a few I’ve run into – and I’m sure many of you have too. 1) How did you get published? On the surface – this should be easy to answer. I wrote a book and then I: a) self-pubbed b) queried/pitched to an agent/editor c) sacrificed 10… Read more

I Don’t Owe You Jack

Posted in blog | Tagged , , | 3 Comments
Followers. We all want them. On Twitter. Facebook. Our blogs. Tumblr. Whatever. There’s a certain niceness in thinking that our words are being heard when we toss them out into the void, but just because we put them out there, it doesn’t mean anyone is required to respond. (I waxed poetic about this particular topic in an earlier post a while back…) Jeffe had a good point on her blog post the other day about the perception of using social media to sell books – and how a social media guru at RWA last week told her why twitter is worse than facebook. Now, the thing is – media is only as good as you use it. If all you’re doing is parroting is “BUY MY CRAP” then it probably doesn’t matter what platform you use. But if you’re actually creating real networking relationships, guess what? It doesn’t matter where… Read more
