Wielding the Green Pencil of Death

Posted in blog | Tagged , | Leave a comment
My copyedits came in yesterday. Along with a house style guide, a legend of obscure short-hand symbols, and a magical green pencil, all provided by my awesome editor, Danielle. It’s a tad intimidating, I’ll admit. In between my gilded words are copious amounts of colored notes – Danielle’s line edits in grey, the copy-editor’s in red, Danielle’s rebuttal to some of those red marks…in green. It’s almost like Christmas came and barfed all over my book. I mean that in the nicest possible way, of course. It can be hard to see your words and sentences shredded – but honestly, the editors aren’t changing my writing voice, so much as refining it and making it stronger. In the writing world, less really is more – and prose often needs snipping to keep it crisp and fresh. So now I’ve got two weeks to go through all these little changes and… Read more

Workshopping It

Posted in blog, workshops | Leave a comment
I’m starting to get requests to do workshops or guest blogs. Not a whole lot, yet, but enough that I’m starting to think about it. Which is sort of odd for me, since I’m not sure I’m enough of an expert to really “teach” anyone anything about writing. The best I can think of is maybe something on the art of being a panster. (or “mister” as Jeffe prefers). Or maybe some combination of things that might work for both pansters/plotters. Ideally, I’d like to get some input on maybe running Flash Fiction exercises, because some of what works in pansting is just letting go of the moment and writing what shows up. (Something that plotters tend to be fairly uncomfortable with.) Five minute writing prompts might work pretty well for that, I think. But again, the most I can do is talk about what works for “me” – and… Read more

Release

Posted in blog, metaphoric crap that is supposed to mean something deep but probably doesn't | 4 Comments
I have a hard time letting go of things. Those of you who know me, or who have followed along with the blog know what I’m talking about. Jeffe and I had a conversation about it via IM the other night, in fact, and she mentioned that the Chinese see everything in a cycle of 5: Birth -> Growth -> Maturation -> Decline -> Death. And of course, this concept could apply to anything – ideas, jobs, relationships, whatever. We decided that I had the biggest problem with Decline. Whether or not that’s because I’m afraid of Death, I’m not entirely sure. Though, maybe that’s not right either. But I know I have a tendency to hold on to things. Change can be very painful for me. Better, maybe to just keep strangling the life out of something until I have no choice but to bury it. Not sure what… Read more

Outlines and Updates

Posted in blog | Leave a comment
I finally managed to get my outline finished last night. (Yeah, I guess I tend to cut it close.) But the key thing is that it is done and I have something to aim for. And seeing as I have to finish and polish the MS up by November, that doesn’t leave me a huge amount of time. The good thing is that 40k has already been written – bits will have to be changed here and there, specifically because the circumstances of Brush of Darkness changed- but it’s doable. I have to say that writing an outline really is a challenge for me. There are places where I might have considered fleshing out some of the ideas, but I didn’t really want to. Not because I can’t or because of laziness or whatever, but just because I’m not ready to know everything that happens just yet – and I… Read more

Beach-Combing

Posted in blog, writing | Tagged , | Leave a comment
The best time to beach-comb is at dawn. I think nearly everyone probably knows this. Something about the way everything seems so perfectly untouched, with new treasures washing up in each small swell. Or maybe it’s just the potential that is so interesting. The knowledge that you can’t actually collect each seashell as it appears. If you let one slip away, is it lost forever? Or if you wait around a bit will a better one show up? And how long do you wait before continuing on? When I was little, I used to look for beach glass, though that is fairly rare it seems, these days. I also used to find moonshells, though that is nearly almost as rare. I haven’t found one in ages, honestly, and that’s a bit of a shame. Today we mostly looked for oyster shells, but we found the usual sorts of scallops and angel-wings, clams,… Read more
