Nyumbani
Seeing as it’s a bit of a slow day today, I thought I’d bring some attention to a charity organization I used to be a part of. Nyumbani is the first and largest facility for HIV+ orphans in Kenya. In the past, I’ve done a fair bit of pro-bono work for them, including graphics and web design (though that’s long since passed out of my hands.) I even created a calendar the used for fund-raising one year. Anyway, it’s a fabulous organization that is doing wonderful things for children, both with the Nyumbani orphanage itself and through the work they do via Lea Toto, which is an outreach program for families who wish to provide care to HIV+ children within their own homes. I haven’t had the chance to visit myself, but I know a number of people who have – and everyone’s been touched at the bravery of these…

Once Upon a Time

Tagged fairy tales, fox and willow, once upon a time, sometimes I watch tv

It’s no secret that I pretty much adore every fairy tale ever written. I had a copy of Grimm’s Fairy Tales as a kid that I wore the binding off of by the time I was in 5th grade. It was one of those 500 page monstrosities without any of the sanitized versions – full of all the eye-pecking and bloody shoes, incest, rape, murder…and the occasional happily ever after. (Whoever decided fairy tales were for kids clearly never read the things – there’s some pretty dark stuff when you start poking between the lines.) They’re a little harder for me to read these days – some of the writing feels stilted and while I appreciate much of what the stories do say, they leave so very much out – particularly when it comes to many of the female characters, most of whom are merely window dressing to be married…

Word-Whore ~ Fox and Willow Thursday
It’s been one of those surreal sorts of weeks where everything has devolved into utter chaos. So I’m going to whine. Lucky you. Lucy’s hacking away at night with this lousy cough making sleep hard to come by. Connor took a digger playing basketball and torqued his knee. (I’m just waiting for the phone call from school telling me to come get him – I did the ice and ibuprofen thing this morning, but it was pretty stiff. I kinda doubt he’ll be playing in his game tonight, which sucks – but we’ll still go and support the team.) And my joints just hurt all over today for no apparent reason. (Though I did somehow manage to crack a knuckle and maybe mess up a ligament in my hand. Burns like hell every time I try to twist open something. Meh. Body is falling apart. And I know I’m stressing…

Shift Change
Things have been a bit more hectic around here than usual – aside from the usual settling back in after vacation last week, Lucy was sick over the weekend (followed by me, naturally). But it’s been complicated by the fact that I’ve taken a new position at work. It will take me a little while to figure out what I’m doing, but I’m rather excited about getting the chance to do something new. Today was a bit of a mess since I had to move cubes – having to cull several years of crap is both inspiring and depressing. I’m in the new cube now, but most of my stuff is still in boxes. Not sure I have the energy to put everything back up just yet. The basics are in place, though – so it’s just a question of getting used to working with a new team in a…

Womanthology Space!
It’s officially out! Lots of different places to buy it from, but I’m linking over to Comixology for the digital convenience. My 6 page story is called The Wind in Her Hair – and yes, it’s The Little Mermaid…retold with genderswapped steampunk robots. Because I can. (Obviously I’d love it if you guys could spread the word and let me know what you think, but I’m just super happy to have it finally released.)…
