Prolo-wha?

Posted in back pain, grumpy as fuck | 14 Comments
Aren’t you all so lucky? You get to see an x-ray of my spine with a big honking needle sticking out of it. (Doc found it very funny that I wanted to blog about it, but there it is. Next time I’ll see if he can’t get a shot with a regular camera so you can see me in all my glory.) Yes, that needle is sitting on the bone. Yea, it doth sucketh mightily. So, yeah. It hurts like a bitch. The numbing stuff hasn’t quite worn off yet, so I suspect things will be a bit worse later on tonight or tomorrow. And round two starts in two week. Huzzah!… Read more

Pain Pity Party

Posted in back pain | 12 Comments
Not really. Maybe a little bit. In either case, I’m starting my first round of Prolotherapy next week. I warn you all now, since I suspect I’m going to be rather grumpy for the next several months as a result. Essentially my SI joint is continuing to fall out of whack. As soon as I get put back into place, about 15 minutes later it’s out again. It’s driving my PT nuts – every time I come in, it’s in a different location – right side, left side, posterior, anterior, left leg is too short, right leg is too short. Yesterday morning when I went to PT, I was out on the right side. A few hours later when I went to my pain doc, I was out on the left. So…yeah. Ligaments aren’t really holding it in place too well anymore. So. Prolotherapy will involve a series of injections… Read more

Bionic Woman

Not really. Heading back to PT tomorrow for another round of treatments for the SI Joint dysfunction – aka – the big pain in my ass. Literally. Last round of PT did help and I was doing much better until RWA National. Don’t know if it was sitting on the plane, or walking around at the con or too much prancing in those lovely boots, but this sucker pops out at least once or twice a week now. Been back to the doc’s twice to get it realigned (including once last week. Two hours later it had already popped back out.) I can sometimes get it to go back in myself, but due to the hyper-mobility issue it’s really, really hard to get it to reinsert. I usually get stuck contorting myself into some horrible angle every few hours and then…*pop*. It snags back in. It’s driving me crazy. I have dabbled… Read more

Willow Bark for the Win

Posted in back pain | 6 Comments
In my never ending quest for pain relief, I decided to step back and take a more holistic approach. Unfortunately my last set of injections did not take and the last week and a half have pretty much been nothing but  pain. Ninety percent seems to stem from a set of extremely deep seated trigger points on the left side of my spine – and I’ve tried everything from trigger point injections/facet joint injections/acupuncture/capsaicin wraps/ice/TENS/PT – you name it, I’ve tried it. Last week alone, I ended up taking Vicodin, Percocet and Valium with little to no relief at all. And even if it took the edge off, most of the meds either knocked me out or gave me migraines or nausea. So, last week I bought a bunch of books on chronic pain, all of them swearing they had the answer. Most of what they had there were exercises, both physical and… Read more

Facet Blocks, Round 2

Posted in back pain | 5 Comments
Not much time today to blog, so I leave you with this awesome video of what a facet joint injection looks like. I had three of them today (same as about two weeks ago – worked well, but wore off a few days ago. Vicodin has been helpful in offsetting some of the resulting pain, but I really hate taking it.)… Read more
