Friday Shinies

I’m still under the weather and feeling cotton-headed, but I wanted to show off a few new Abby Sinclair sketchards (done by Aimo). The cool thing is that they weren’t commissioned by me or for me…someone else commissioned her for them (and I was  given permission to post them here.) I’m feeling pretty snazzy about that – for one, the pictures are awesome and  secondly, I’m extremely flattered that anyone would actually commission art based on my series. So, huzzah! Enjoy! (And if you like, think about commissioning Aimo yourself. 😉 ) Also – I should have details soon about my upcoming Trace of Moonlight blog tour, so watch out for that!              … Read more

Word Whore ~ Fox and Willow Thursday

Posted in blog | Tagged , , | Leave a comment
Late post today because I’m in a bit of a sick space. Still not feeling well, so just popping on to mention my post over at Word-Whores – just a few thoughts on some personal mistakes I’ve made in the publishing process. Also, new Fox & Willow up today, so check that out. Incidentally, I’m  getting some F&W swag printed up for the upcoming AAD con – just gotta think of a tag line for it. “Of Foxes and Fairy Tales?” My fever brain isn’t working particularly well, so perhaps I’ll just forgo that part of it for now…… Read more

Burning Bridges

Posted in blog | Tagged , , | 10 Comments
Just a thought or two about the small world of publishing. And in some ways, it really is small. Many of us tend to run in the same sorts of circles – whether it’s social media or mailing lists or writing groups or whatever. We follow the same sorts of people – the movers and shakers, the editors, the publishers, the agents, the gurus, the bloggers. Most of us are trying to pick up new bits of information. Find out where the trends are and where they’re going. Or whatever the newest controversy is. Or to network in the hopes that maybe it really *is* who you know. But one of the things I find fascinating is how many hats some of us wear. Some agents are also authors, for example. Some authors provide editing services. Or networking services. Or run workshops. Some people move and change circles throughout their… Read more

To Sweet Beginnings and Bitter Endings

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , , | 12 Comments
I guess this is the part where I breathe a sigh of relief. Or maybe I get depressed because it’s over? Yes, that is a shot of the pages before I mailed them out. Yes, I am questioning why douche bags is listed as two words, when it should be one. These are the things that make my world turn, obviously. It’s a bit odd knowing that for all intents and purposes, my book contract is officially over. I mailed those first pass pages off this morning and as of now, I’m done. (Yes, there’s all the promo stuff to do – the swag to hand out, the guest blogs and the cons, but the contract itself is filled.) And yes, it is bittersweet. Reading through those pages one last time and correcting the small things, I can’t help but wonder if I could have done things differently. Or if… Read more

Writing What You Don’t Know

Posted in blog | Tagged , , , , | 3 Comments
I was on a forum over the weekend where people were talking about things they hated most in books. One person commented that they hated it when men wrote about women characters. Now, the user has a right to that opinion, even though it was pointed out that that sort of limitation would completely obliterate most books as we know them. And the thing is – the user’s specific complaint was the author’s treatment of the female character’s period – e.g. referring to it as her “little monthly visitor” or some such.  Now, I haven’t read the passage in question, so I don’t know the context. But her argument is that you can’t write about something you don’t have and will never be able to experience. Huh? That’s like saying I can’t write about dying because I’m not dead. The short answer is  – not everyone experiences everything, regardless of… Read more
