Word Whore ~ Fox and Willow Thursday

Yeah, I know I’ve been pretty bad the last few weeks with the blogging. Lots going on in real life – additional surgeries to plan,  diagnoses to deal with, AC units to install…it’s been a rather lopsided time. (I’m taking a mini vacation this weekend to go visit Danielle though – just two gals and their laptops and comfort food for a few days. Really looking forward to it, frankly. I’m 90k into this first draft – still slower than I’d like, but I’m plugging away at it. Hoping to some good writing hours in on the train tomorrow. I just want to finish it so I can start ripping it apart.) As an aside note, the panel at Awesomecon DC went pretty well. (Shout out and thanks to Alma Katsu for giving me the heads up and inviting me along…and giving me a ride back to the metro afterwards.)… Read more

Word-Whore ~ Fox and Willow Thursday

It’s been one of those surreal sorts of weeks where everything has devolved into utter chaos. So I’m going to whine. Lucky you. Lucy’s hacking away at night with this lousy cough making sleep hard to come by. Connor took a digger playing basketball and torqued his knee. (I’m just waiting for the phone call from school telling me to come get him – I did the ice and ibuprofen thing this morning, but it was pretty stiff. I kinda doubt he’ll be playing in his game tonight, which sucks – but we’ll still go and support the team.) And my joints just hurt all over today for no apparent reason. (Though I did somehow manage to crack a knuckle and maybe mess up a ligament in my hand. Burns like hell every time I try to twist open something. Meh. Body is falling apart. And I know I’m stressing… Read more

Pieces of Me

I suspect the title of this blog post is far more poetic than the actual content will be. I debated saving it for something more emo and angst filled, but eh. Sometimes writing those sorts of posts are cathartic…but sometimes they are really whiny sounding too. Anyway, I’ve been pretty slammed the last few days – work has picked up in a crazy fashion, leaving me very little time for anything else during the day. School stuff kicking in for the kids. Web/graphic design stuff – funny how it’s either feast or famine for this. Crickets forever and then bam! Everyone wants a chunk of my time for something – site redesigns, shirt designs, plug-in creation…just crazy.  (These are good problems to have, however.) Add the nightly writing sessions, plus a beta read or two and there goes the rest of my sanity. Even all my errands are out to… Read more

How to Hijack a Genre

One of the panels I went to at WFC this past week was about Urban Fantasy – and specifically what sort of writing really makes up a UF story. (Charles de Lint, Tanya Huff, David G. Hartwell and Tim Powers were the panelists) There were some rather fascinating arguments being made as far as what was historical fantasy vs contemporary fantasy vs urban fantasy – and really, I think what it all comes down to is how the publishers choose to market the books more than anything else. But even so, you could see there was a definite line drawn in the sand between the “old school” UF authors and the fact that they really didn’t want to be associated with what’s being marketed as UF today. Even the description of the panel – The North American lineage of Urban Fantasy has been traced from Unknown Worlds, and the term was clearly… Read more

I’m working from home today, awaiting a vanity. Back in March and April the DH attempted to redo our bathroom himself…and actually did a fabulous job. We were all set to start working on the other bathrooms over the summer. Until the great shower debacle set things back. No, my shower still isn’t fixed. Yes, we’re going to hire a professional to do it. No, we’re not afraid of tackling a larger project…but time is becoming a bit of a factor, and essentially we’re going to have to rebuild the entire thing from scratch (walls, shower pan, new door, etc.), so we’re just going to toss some money at a professional. We’re still going to at least redo the kids bathroom ourselves though, hence me waiting for the vanity today. (“We’ll deliver it sometime between midnight and fuck up your whole day, ha ha!”) In the meantime, I’m trying to… Read more
